I was totally thinking all the things in parenthesis the second I saw that picture. I would have ran in the other direction. I'm such a sissy.

I love bats. Bats eat mosquitios, which makes them tops in my book. Unless they have rabies, which is not as common as some might think, though one does need to be careful, they are wonderful creatures, ridding the world of annoying insects and producing guana that makes some of the world's best natural fertilizer. Too bad they get such a bad rap.

Since I am allergic to those painful rabies shots, I must say that I probably wouldn't have pet the little dude. But mostly because my last experience with a potentially rabid animal resulted in my family having to feed the wild dog for 2 weeks and see if he showed signs of rabies. If he had, someone would have had to shoot the dogs and get its head to London (we were in Saudi Arabia at the time). Luckily the dog was fine, and no drastic measures had to be taken. But still, the potential traumatized me.

Yay! Bats! I'm off to London Zoo tomorrow and will be trying to make friends with their bat colony...

When I worked the outdoor summer stock in Kentucky, bats would come every night and hang off various bits of the scenery. We also had the hugest luna moths. It was funny, though, to be doing Peter Pan and a bat would be hanging from the kids' bedroom set. It looked cool at the Lost Boys' house, though.

I love bats -- at a distance. On summer evenings I go out in my back yard and watch them diving around after mosquitoes. But I wouldn't have had the nerve to pet one.
