Thank goddess we don't have any formalised tipping in this country; 15-20% is OBSCENE. I tip the pizza delivery person (generously, beause they're usually uni students) and might tell a restaurant to round up the bill (if they've been helpful and charming and the meal's been tasty), and maybe tell a taxi driver to keep the change if he's been amusing and hasn't tried to rip me off with the fare -- but that's it. Staff at my hairdressing joint and beauty salon would clutch their throats, fall over and possibly die if I offered them a tip. (And, may I say, your toenail colour sounds perfectly delightful.) Love, R xxx

15-20%? Well, which is it to be? If they're giving you the choice between "Too Much Tip" and "Way Too Much Tip" I think you're entitled to skip out the door without so much as a cent. Anyways, it was a GIFT. You arent supposed have to to pay for a gift. *harumph* You did fine. I tip my hairdresser - I like her and her haircuts are way too cheap to be economically viable - but everyone else gets tipped (generously) if I have had exceptional service, and by that I mean that they havent just 'done their job without being surly'. Forget it. And I hope you get to go back soon. s x

If they do charge your card have Visa remove it; it wasn't an authorized charge. Then let your friend know what they did. Well, maybe not; he might get his feelings hurt or something. I only tip if it was deserved; if I get shitty service they get no tip.

You should have tipped. No matter what you paid in the way of a tip was worth getting FREE services. Although tipping is NOT mandatory (in some restautrants it is) and you won't get a fine for NOT doing so....it really *IS* the right thing to do. I always try to leave at least 20% and it is only good karma to do so. My daughter lives on her tips as a bartender. Luckily for me I have NEVER had to work in a minimum paying job where I relied on tips to pay my bills.

They can't take out a charge on your visa. That's illegal. I think your $5 was fine . . . that's what you had, and I know you were gracious to the staff. Try not to worry about it. I use a lot of coupons to get free meals and I always try to leave about 16% -- I usually double the tax.

I did mean to say, too, that tipping in this country is absolutely discouraged in most places and forbidden by management in many. Perhaps we don't have the minimum wage issues here that you have in the US. We do tend to think in a very egalitarian fashion about many things, and many employees here are/would be horribly embarrassed or offended if a customer or client offered them a tip. It's just not done -- except in some areas of the hospitality industry, obviously -- but it's never expected. And anyone leaving a blatantly greedy and grasping notice like the one you're talking about would be publicly mocked and ridiculed! x

I tip in third world countries. Rarely in Australia except under the same conditions as Hissy. When I visited in the US, I did find the tipping situation odd. Gift certificates certainly should include any gratuity if required.

Thanks Hiss, I was worried about incurring bad karma. I don't think you can incur total bad karma if you feel guilty about something you did.

I enjoyed tipping when I was waiting tables, but I like to think I earned my 10-20% :) I do remember when I tried to tip in Australia, a couple of waiters looked at me like they were insulted... Oh, and I definitely understand on saying something like 'artist' instead of 'unemployed, etc...'. I just say 'writer', or 'college student' other than 'semi-employed, anime peddler that pretends to write on occasion.'

No, I think you only incur bad karma if you demand (and accept) things from people that are not given freely -- because, say, you've bullied them into it by putting up a big sign to shame them into it -- especially when they actually can't afford to tip you and they probably earn less than you do in the first place and now they'll have to beg, borrow or steal from someone else to pay their own bills! x

In Utah, it's pretty typical to give no more than 10% (cheap bastards, if you ask me). I generally tip more, just because I know most service people in this state get screwed. That said, when I was teaching skiing, the only way we made any money was through tips, which were few and far between. We didn't expect them, but were thankful for whatever, because it was the gesture and not the amount. So in my mind, the fact that you tipped at all is important, and the amount is not.

Being a chronic over-tipper (as Husband calls me), partially due to the fact that I used to wait tables and hated it when I'd bust my ass for people and then they'd leave my a crappy tip in return (I'm sorry, but $2.90/hour just isn't enough when you're dealing with picky eaters and their screaming children), I can't really give you much advice on that front. I can, however, say hooray for boy hands! and I'm glad you finally got some well-deserved pampering. Oh, and in response to your "question" (I'll call it that, even though it wasn't phrased as one) on my diary -- the station was 107.9, and it's not in the same location anymore. That was its first summer in existence, and it was on Old L'pool Rd., near a bicycle shop.
